If you missed this morning’s discussion on SAFM‘s media show, hosted by Ashraf Garda, here is a podcast! A lot of people tweeted that they couldn’t listen to it because they don’t have FM radios at home. It should be mentioned most local radio stations are also available on LSM 7-10′s preferred radio source – the internet.

Ashraf chatted to myself  (2ovRadio) and Darren Scott from Ballz Radio, about everything to do with internet radio and how the medium is growing at a rapid pace in South Africa.

Taken from the recent article I wrote for Memeburn.com:

A recent survey in the US by TargetSpot, a digtal audio network, found an increase in tablet ownership of nearly 87%, combined with a smartphone take-up increase of 22%.

As the world fast grabs hold of new devices to make their lives more connected, so our ways of delivering and receiving everyday content is being reshaped. Radio is but one of these everyday concepts that are being delivered in a new and fresh way. It’s a concept that is rapidly changing though, particularly in emerging markets like South Africa.

Someone That I Used To Know. The Cover. And The Covers Cover.

You have heard the Aussie outfit Gotye’s tune “Somebody I used to know”, if you havent I will invoke a piece of that that tired old phrase, “hiding + rock”. If you havent heard it you should have. It’s a great tune with real instruments and great vocals with a proper lyric. There is also no 12 bar rap moment hidden somewhere as a cheap bridge.

It was indie-ish then 5fm played it, destroyed the hipsters love of the band but woke people up to it; then Highveld and KFM picked up and brought it to parts of Bellville and Benoni where it found a new audience who have embraced and will more than likely adopt them as their own and bring on a deluge of remix’s with a euro 4/4 feel and some crap ringtones which purport to sound the same but actual dont but will only cost you R3,50.

Anyway.

The tune and has had a surprising number of makeovers on the net over the past few months, which I have collated below for you; you know save you the trouble etc.

The first is the actual Gotye, which by the way  is derived from “Gaultier” (or “Gautier” or “Gauthier”,) the French equivalent of “Wouter” (“Walter” in English.)… So now we know.

The second is a single instrument cover of the tune by Walk Of The Earth – damn clever and a very good cover.

The Third in the rougues gallery of this tune is by Key Of Awesome, who have taken Gotye’s version, mixed it WOFTE and then rewritten the lyrics…I know.

Videos after the jump…

Internet Radio Shows in The Numbers…Are the Others Lying?

Internet Dog Listens Quietly To The Truth...

As seen on 2oceansvibe.com yesterday:

South Africa’s Fundamentally Flawed FM Radio “Listenership”

We’re at an interesting juncture with regards to media and, in particular, radio in South Africa. Advertisers have been blowing a load of money on radio for years, hoping that the “shotgun approach” will get the message across to mainstream FM’s listeners. The listenership figures they are working with, are produced by way of the fundamentally flawed and dubious “radio diary” approach. You can read more about the radio diary system here and here (prepare to be astounded – deducing listenership and charging adverstisers on this basis is bordering on fraud), but in essence they go from door to door and ask people to fill in their radio listening habits. I know, how archaic? But, more importantly, who of you out there know anyone who knows anyone else who has ever, in their lives, even heard of someone knocking on their door to do this?

Brendon Shields…

Can I sing you a song about our future?
Maybe your little heart will hurt a little less?

It is one of those hopeful songs that I fit perfectly with couple of years most of us have had!

Have I Told You Lately…

In case I havent mentioned it recently there is something new happening in the Radio world. As one of the partners in SA’s first commercial digital station I need to often remind myself that its not only the business-of-business that is important, but also that there is some damn cool stuff happening on air too, and you may well be missing it!

Lindsay Williams and I have for sometime now, being doing a weekly show 10am – 12pm daily called HardWilli In The Morning. Its irreverent, intelligent (thats where Lindsay comes in) and all round good fun, as we poke holes and fingers into the latest stories to come out of the worlds press and media outlets.

You can catch us here www.2oceansviberadio.com or download the app to your smartphone (Android, iPhone and BB) here 2ov.fm

So thats HardWilli – 10am – 12pm Daily on 2oceansVibe DIGITAL RADIO…
